How often should you bathe your dog?
The frequency of dog baths depends on various factors such as coat type, skin sensitivity, activity level, and environmental conditions.
Those dogs who love to spend time outdoors and roll around in mud might need a more frequent bath than those with healthy coats and low-maintenance lifestyles need only one bath per month.
Some dogs like Siberian huskies don’t require frequent baths, because their natural oily coats help repel dirt naturally.
Frequent bathing can strip the natural oils from your dog’s skin, leading to potential skin diseases such as dryness and irritation. Consulting vets guidance on bath frequency can be invaluable, especially if your dog has skin sensitivities or allergies, and needs frequent baths.
Step-by-step guide for a safe and enjoyable bath
Brush before bathing
One of the crucial pre-bath steps that every owner/groomer must consider for better grooming.
If you’ve tried to comb your hair without brushing before washing it, you might understand the reason. It hurts a lot. Not tried? Get an experience when you wash your hair next time.
This is what we don’t want our pets to feel.
Brushing before bath will remove the loose hair, tangles, and mats, and allow the shampoo to penetrate to the skin for a thorough clean.
Skipping brushing can tighten the mats or tangles after contact with the water, making them harder to remove, and of course, your pet feels uncomfortable with it.
Not only for this, but brushing minimizes the risk of clogged drains from loose hair, so you’ll save some post-bath cleanup as well!
Choose the Right Shampoo
Just as humans have different varieties of shampoo, so do dogs.
Not all pet shampoos are created equally, and selecting the right one that fits with their specific need is important.
Some shampoos are formulated only for sensitive skin, while others are designed for dogs with allergies or specific coats or anti-parasites. Choosing the right shampoo will help prevent irritation, dryness, and other skin issues.
Note: If your dog is going through some skin problems, it’s better to take a recommendation from a vet on gentle or mediated shampoos that are safe for your pet. Also, never use a human shampoo on a pet, because they are particularly formulated for a human’s pH, which might trigger discomfort and skin irritation on a pet.
Protect sensitive areas
It is essential to protect the sensitive areas like the eyes and ears of your furry friend while taking a bath.
Unintentionally, if water or shampoo goes inside these areas, your pet can be uncomfortable and even lead to a painful infection which we won’t want to see.
Better to avoid direct water and possibly, gently place cotton balls at the entrance of the ear to block water and shampoo from getting in, always remember to remove them after completion.
Right use of Water Temperature
Do you prefer to have low-temperature water on your body? If yes, hats off to you.
If not, the same pinch from me and my furry friend.
I prefer lukewarm temperatures for washing my furry friend- RAIZOO, a cross Japanese Spitz. And of course, he loves to have it on his body.
While washing your pet, you’ve to consider the comfort of your pet. Water that’s too cold can be uncomfortable, and water that’s too hot can cause skin irritation or burns.
Testing the water temperature with your hand before bathing is a quick way to a comfortable bath.
Apply Shampoo and Lather Gently
Once you’re ready for the above things, make ready your pet for a bath and start with wetting their coat before applying shampoo.
Firstly, apply shampoo at the neck area and work your way down the body, avoiding sensitive areas like the eyes and ears.
Gentle massaging the motions for spreading the shampoo thoroughly. Also, this can help your dog relax and enjoy the experience.
Rinse Thoroughly
Once you’re done with shampooing, then it’s time to Rinse properly to remove all soap residue.
Failing to clear a shampoo from a pet’s body leads to skin irritation, dryness, and even painful hot spots. Rense until the water runs clear, and use your fingers to check for any spots that might still have suds, especially in thicker fur areas.
Proper Drying
Once you give a proper bath, it’s time to give a proper drying. Consider it as the most important part of washing. Because failing to dry properly leads to suffering from irritation hot spots and fungal infection.
For this, you can start with towels to squeeze excess water from their coat. Most dogs will naturally shake off water, which helps speed up drying.
There is no hassle for the breeds with small fur, but the real challenge comes for long and thick fur breeds.
To dry that fur, we might have to invest some extra money in a dog dryer.
Note: I said dog dryer. It’s because those hair dryers of humans are designed with heat, which might not fit for a dog. It can damage fur as well as burn the skin of your lovely friend.
Reward with treats and praise
Rewarding your pets throughout the bath with treats and encouraging positive association will make bathing as an interesting part.
Simply, rewarding with treats, gentle praise, and positive reinforcement will make bathing a positive experience, and for a future bath, it will help them to associate bath time as fun, enjoyable, and of course, a TREATSSSSSSSS.
Conclusion
Bathing your pet at home can be a wonderful experience for both pets and you. Each bath is an opportunity to show your dog love and keep them healthy and comfortable. By following these tips, you can make bath time enjoyable for your furry friend.
