10 Amazing Facts About Puppies

We believe you’re spending quality time with your newly adopted puppy. To make it more delightful, we’ve come up with 10 interesting facts about puppies that will be an incredible experience for time spent.

As a pet owner, we find every puppy cute, and lovely, right? But, do you know that a non-pet lover also falls in love with a puppy cuteness, somehow?

Amazed? This is how our other facts are going to entertain you and you won’t believe that it is real. Surely!

Let’s explore one by one:

ā€œPUPPYā€ word is derived from French

The word ā€œPuppyā€ is derived from the French word ā€poupeeā€, which means a ā€œdollā€ or ā€œtoyā€, and later it entered the English language and was pronounced as PUPPY. Before, English speakers used to say ā€œwhelpsā€ for new-born puppies.

Born completely blind and deaf

When puppies get out from a mother’s womb, they come out without hearing and slight sense. It means they’re completely blind and deaf and of course without teeth.

Since, the gestation period is just 2 months, a pregnant dog could not catch fast prey and contribute to the pack, as a result, they are born underdeveloped.

However, from the first hours of birth, they’re blessed with a smelling and touching sense. Puppy’s mother starts to lick and nuzzle right after birth, which helps to stimulate their sense of touch.

Milk teeth

Like other animals, puppies also come into the world without any teeth. You barely see any teeth in puppies unless they reach the age of three weeks.

Later after reaching 4-5 months of age, these milk teeth start to fall and are replaced with a set of 42 adult teeth.

No competition for sleeping

As I said, puppies at an early age need enough sleep to grow big and strong.

Most of the time, they’re growing, learning about the new world, and exercising with you, which makes it crucial for supporting brain and immune system development. For better support, pet experts recommend a cozy spot for sound sleep as they require undisturbed sleep in this developing process.

Life lesson starts from around week 5

During the weaning process, puppies’ mothers start to snap or growl at unacceptable behavior which teaches their puppies to behave in a proper way, especially after 5 weeks old.

That’s why it’s recommended not to separate puppies from their mother till 5 weeks, which prevents an important learning/training session for a little pug. Plus, it helps the puppy to learn obedience, which makes it easier for future training.

Identical Puppy twins

Often there are many puppies in a litter, each genetically unique, but do you believe that puppies can be identical twins?

There was no evidence of identical puppy twins, until in 2016, a vet Kurt de Cramer delivered them via Caesarean section. There might be unconfirmed cases of genetically identical twins, but it was the first officially confirmed case.

Changing coat

Depending on the breed, the color of puppies can shift and grow over time, a bit like humans. At first, they’re born with a single layer of soft fur, and once they shed that layer (usually it takes four to six months), their coat develops to a thicker. This coat could be darker, lighter, or display new spots.

Don’t worry if your pet’s hair starts to fall.

Unique Nose Prints

Every puppy has a unique nose print, just like human fingerprints.

Green born puppy?

It’s surprising to know that a puppy can be born green. Thankfully, it’s not a permanent color and fades away after a few weeks. This unusual color is caused when green bile pigment gets mixed with the amniotic fluid, according to Veterinarians.

Manipulative eyes

Everyone falls into the manipulation of the puppies, even non-pet lovers too. With their inadvertent expression, they’re in search of our attention. From the early days, they learned to raise their eyebrows to make their eyes bigger and sadder and attract human attention.

Next time, watch carefully how they make dramatic facial expressions when they feel we’re looking at them.

Extra #1.  Reason behind Puppies’ Cuteness

In the beginning, we’ve mentioned that non-pet lovers too find cuteness in a puppy. Science has given this as a ā€œBaby Schemaā€ effect.

For those without an idea, it’s a natural response to the physical features of babies (puppies-)  that release a hormone called oxytocin and dopamine, or a simple ā€œhappy hormoneā€ in our brains. Physical features such as puppy eyes, large heads compared to their body, or soft skin and coats.
